Pfaltzgraff Pottery Matte Green Prairie Style Vase

PfaltzgraffonbookHere is a two-arm Prairie Style matte green vintage art pottery vase by Pfaltzgraff.

Some vessels deliver a wow factor. This one does.

It is magnificent, big and beautiful. The two handles are nicely angular. The color of the Pfaltzgraff Matte Green glaze is fabulous. It is a standout in any setting.  You could call this a “Statement Piece” and design a whole room around it with ease.

In the Arts and Crafts era, there was a craze for matte green pottery which probably was begun by Artus Van Briggle in his work at the Rookwood Pottery. Some companies, notably Teco and Grueby, were noted for their matte green glazes. More than 70 American Art Pottery companies produced a version of a matte green glaze at one point or another in their history. Pfaltzgraff made one of the best matte green glazes and this is a prime example of their work.

The vase is from a short-lived and much sought after art pottery line produced by Pfaltzgraff Pottery of York, Pennsylvania, a company that was founded in 1811 and is still in business.  This even has known a shape number, which is 113.  Shape 113 appears on the vintage art pottery market about once every four to five years, but seldom with a glaze so fine as this one.

This Pfaltzgraff vase is 7 inches tall with a 4 inch diameter at the mouth (excluding the arms). The interior is a very pale yellow gold shade.
